Innovations from France: FOREST4EU Explores Forest Resilience to Climate Change

The city of Caen in France hosted the fourth international study visit within the FOREST4EU project, held from June 4th to 6th, 2025, and organized by the National Centre for Forest Ownership (Centre National de la Propriété Forestière – CNPF) and the AFORCE network.

Throughout the program, participants took part in inspiring panels and discussions on adaptive forestry practices and carbon sequestration. Special attention was given to presentations by operational groups showcasing concrete solutions to current challenges: FuturForest (tree migration to new climate zones), DoNaTo (Douglas fir forest management), and CASTANI-CO (sustainable management of chestnut forests). The roundtable enabled an open exchange of experiences, discussion of challenges, and the generation of new ideas for future collaboration.

Participants had the opportunity to discover examples of adaptive forestry in the field and to test innovative tools for assessing climate risks (Bioclimsol), diagnosing tree vitality (Archi), and evaluating biodiversity (IBP). Digital solutions and remote sensing tools, which significantly facilitate sustainable forest management and forest owner education, attracted particular interest.

The final part of the program was dedicated to knowledge transfer and strengthening cooperation among operational groups from different countries. Workshop results were presented, and the concluding discussion focused on planning future activities and spreading innovations at the European level.

The FOREST4EU project brings together operational groups from nine European countries, aiming to transfer knowledge and best practices in forestry and agroforestry. For more information about innovations and upcoming events, please visit the official project website.
