NBS4LOCAL: Visit to Best Practice Examples in Water Management in Alicante, Spain

As part of the NBS4LOCAL project, a visit to best practice examples in the field of water management was held in Alicante on February 11 and 12. The Alicante Provincial Council hosted the Regional Council of Lapland (Finland) and the Competence Centre Ltd. for research and development. During the visit, we had the opportunity to explore innovative water resource management projects based on nature-based solutions (NbS), exchange knowledge and experiences, and participate in field visits and discussions.

The first day was dedicated to visiting key locations in the Alicante region. The program began with a visit to La Marjal Floodable Park, a unique urban park with an integrated remote management system, which effectively contributes to flood prevention in the city. Participants were introduced to the park's technical solutions and functionalities. The day concluded with a visit to the lower course of the Montnegre River and the Tibi dam, one of the oldest functioning dams in Europe, where participants had the opportunity to learn more about its historical and technical significance in the region’s water resource management.

On the second day, partners were introduced to the vertical natural garden project, and the visit continued at the Provincial Water Council in the Provincial Palace in Alicante, where regional policies and priority projects supporting the application of nature-based solutions were presented.

This event was an exceptional opportunity for networking and strengthening cooperation among partners. Through field visits, discussions, and working meetings, participants exchanged experiences and gained valuable insights into the implementation of innovative natural solutions that improve water resource management, contribute to environmental protection, and strengthen local communities.

NBS4LOCAL is a project co-financed through the Interreg Europe program, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of integrating nature-based solutions into regional and national policies of the European Union.
