March 21st – International Day of Forests: Let’s Protect Our Forests So They Can Continue to Protect Us!
Forests are not just a source of timber—they are the lungs of our planet, home to countless plant and animal species, and natural protectors of soil and water.
In July 2023, an unprecedented storm caused significant damage to the ecosystem of the Spačva Basin, one of the largest contiguous lowland forest complexes in Europe.
RETFOR Project – strengthening the resilience of forest ecosystems
To successfully restore and ensure the long-term protection of the forests in the Spačva Basin, we are implementing the RETFOR project (Strengthening climate resilience measures for protection and revitalisation of ecosystems in the Spačva-Bosut Basin), funded through the Interreg IPA CBC Croatia-Serbia program. The project is led by Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests), with partners including Public Enterprise Vojvodina Forests, Hrvatske vode (Croatian Waters), Public Water Management Company "Vode Vojvodine" Novi Sad, the European Affairs Fund of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and Center of Competence Ltd. for Research and Development.
Key objectives of the RETFOR project:
- Strengthening the resilience of forest and water ecosystems in the Spačva Basin.
- Developing innovative methods for the restoration of damaged forests and protection against future climate hazards.
- Establishing a Climate Change Monitoring Center, which will enable systematic observation of changes in the forest ecosystem.
- Collaborating with Croatian and international partners to improve forest resource management.
